Published: May 23, 2006 ANCHORAGE Explosion blasts manhole cover into air A power failure in downtown Anchorage caused a small underground explosion that blew off a manhole cover and sent dust flying into one man's eye Monday morning, authorities said. The outage at Fourth Avenue between K Street and L Street just before noon released enough energy that it pushed the heavy cast-iron disc off the sidewalk, said Gary Fife, spokesman for Municipal Light and Power. "It burned out with an explosive force," he said. Dust and debris flew, causing a minor injury to the bystander's eye. The man was treated at the scene by paramedics, the Anchorage Fire Department said.
