Explosion blasts manhole cover into air

A power failure in downtown Anchorage caused a small underground explosion that blew off a manhole cover and sent dust flying into one man's eye Monday morning, authorities said.

The outage at Fourth Avenue between K Street and L Street just before noon released enough energy that it pushed the heavy cast-iron disc off the sidewalk, said Gary Fife, spokesman for Municipal Light and Power.

"It burned out with an explosive force," he said.

Dust and debris flew, causing a minor injury to the bystander's eye. The man was treated at the scene by paramedics, the Anchorage Fire Department said.

About 60 downtown customers, including local businesses and restaurants, were without power until about 3 p.m.

Fife said the cause of the outage was still under investigation.
