Rainwater archives headline

Rainwater is often cleaner then anything else out there. It can also come in the form of snow, sleet or even hail. The purpose is not to let it run off into our storm sewers where it is often wasted or contaminated but to use it for our homes and gardens. The key is storage.

Speaking of which did you hear about the bill the senator Paull Shin is trying to get passed? Requirement that anyone who collects rain water in rain barrels or cisterns has to have a government permit. Its preparation for the government to try to become 'god' in my humble opinion. Here is a link for more info on this. http://www.washingtonvotes.org/Legislation.aspx?ID=31223

New fire and EMS station passes environmental muster
Updated: 11/20/2005 11:10:46 AM
By: News 8 Austin Staff

A new Southwest Austin fire and EMS station is already an award winner. Station 43 is the first fire station in Austin with a rainwater collection system for irrigation.

The design won a Leadership and Environmental Design Certification.

Fire officials say the station, located on Escarpment Blvd. just north of Hwy. 45, provides services to the rapidly growing Circle C Ranch subdivision.

"This station is necessary to provide a standard of coverage to citizens that are in the city, this far south, to meet certain response times," AFD Division Chief Duke Turpin said.

It's the first fire station to meet international guidelines for energy efficiency.

Station 43 is also home to a public art installation. "Karst Circle" by artist W. Gary Smith is a landscaped arrangement of boulders and native plants located within the rainwater collection area.

It's the second new fire station in Travis County with a piece from the city's Art in Public Places. EMS Station 28 in Southeast Travis County features a limestone and marble sculpture called "Medicinal Plant Wall" by local artist Philippe Klinefelter.
