November 23,2005 Frances McDonald says she's never been one to start trends, but she thinks a green roof just makes sense. "I think it's a smart idea. The fact that it's out there will help other people
make the decision maybe to do the same thing. I'm not out there trying to convince anybody, though."
The green roof is not a new idea. Places like Europe and even Chicago have jumped on the living roof bandwagon. Built on top of a traditional roof, this organic material does save money on heating costs.
The "green" is a type of evergreen plant called cedum. After installers put a filter edging around the perimeter, they cover the roof with a layer of plastic.
Then a three inch layer of this mix, leaf compost- made from leaves collected by the city of Chattanooga- and a product called permatill, is blown on top of the plastic. Finally, the cedum is planted.Once completed, this roof will require basically no maintenance.
In addition to doubling the roof's life, the green catches storm water run-off, too.
Since the green roof benefits not only the home or business owner, but the entire ecosystem, many cities offer tax breaks to potential green-roof builders. AK NC9.
